Maximum Velocity 12.0

Mark your calendars for Friday, July 20th from 5:00-8:30PM for our 12th Annual Pinewood Derby and Family Fun Night! We will have our Pinewood Derby Races, Inflatable Fun Activities, Water Activities, Games and Yummy Food for all of our families to enjoy. This event has been a huge success each summer and we are all looking forward to an amazing night this year.

The Pinewood Derby was first started in California as a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. Children, with the help of parents, build their own cars from a block of wood. The purpose of the race is to build stronger family relationships. We know that parents will need to do the cutting of the car, but we strongly encourage the children to design and decorate their own cars. Parents may enter their own car in our Adult Division. Please note that you must make a new car together. You may not enter a car that was previously made or that has been raced in ANY Pinewood Derby Race. You also may not use a ready-made kit.

The kit you have contains a block of wood, plastic wheels and nail-type axles. Preschool & Avenues participants may sign up at the Preschool or Avenues Front Desks and pick up a car kit beginning Wednesday, June 27th. Each family may get one car kit per camper (Tundra and up) and one adult car kit. Please refer to the directions enclosed in your kit. It is important that you read and follow all of the rules that have been specified. There will be an Official Derby Check-in on Thursday, July 19th. Please note that this is one day prior to the race. Each car will need to be in its own shoebox/pencil box or a shoebox /pencil box sized plastic container, labeled with your child's name/class/grade.

Our Derby Theme is "A long time ago, in a Derby far, far away...."
Listed below are the categories that you may choose to have your car compete in....all cars compete in the Maximum Velocity Speed Category.

The Judges like to see creativity in the design and like to see that the child painted/decorated their own car.

Those winners (excluding the Adult and Teen Winners) will compete for the Grand Prize Trophy, "Maximum Velocity 12.0!"

On Thursday, July 19th from 12:00-1:00 and 4:00-6:00, we will have the "Official Derby Check-In." Each car must be registered and weighed in to be eligible for competition. If your car needs to be modified in any way to meet the race specifications, it must be done by 6:00 that evening. Come prepared with tools and extra weights just in case. Remember that the cars cannot exceed 5 ounces. Our official derby scale will be available that entire week at the Avenues Desk. This will allow for you to check the weight of your car prior to the official check-in. All cars will remain in a secure location at CDCW until race time on Friday afternoon. Remember each individual car must be in a labeled box.

Don't be overwhelmed...your family can create an incredible car! There are lots of websites and books at the library that can assist you with planning your car. We highly recommend using those resources.

If you have any questions, please email Yvonne. (yterrycdcw@gmail.com)

We are looking forward to another great race! Good Luck!
