Leigh Broughton
Avenues Director

I’ve been a part of the CDCW community since it opened in 1995. First as a teacher, then as a parent, and now as a member of the administrative team. My love for teaching started at a very young age. I remember playing “school” with my chalkboard and reading books to the stuffed animals in my room. Moving ahead several years, I was able to study Early Childhood Education at J. Sergeant Reynolds and Longwood University. However, I feel like my real education began when I started as an assistant teacher at CDCW in the Fall of 1995.

I was surrounded by so many wonderful educators who encouraged me along the way. I became the lead teacher of the 2nd-5th grade classroom (pre-Avenues days), and then as the lead teacher in our Kindergarten program. It was during this time, that I developed the “Road Trip USA” curriculum, which is still being used in our afterschool program in the Avenues building. I eventually took on the role of both the Avenues Assistant Director and Summer Camp Coordinator. With my own children getting older, I left CDCW in 2015 to pursue other interests. However, the love of early childhood education never left me and I returned “home” to CDCW in January of 2020.

I am proud to be a part of an after school program with so many creative teachers and classes. Creating an environment for children that allows them to express themselves through creative play is something that we do on a daily basis. My most cherished memories are from watching my own three sons learn, grow, and develop friendships at CDCW. I’m excited to help create the same environment for our current Avenues children!

When I’m not at CDCW, I carry on my love of teaching as the Children’s Director for my church. I also enjoy going “antiquing”, watching movies, and creating gift baskets. My favorite thing to do is to spend quality time with my family at our cottage on the Rappahannock River.

I feel blessed to have been a part of the CDCW community for all of these years. “Come Grow With Us”.... We would love for you to be a part of it too!
