At CDCW
We value outdoor education as much as in-classroom instruction.

Our campus provides children with ample opportunity to foster a love of nature, the environment, gardening and child-led free play. Our children spend time each day in one of our thirteen outdoor classrooms including The Children’s Discovery Garden, Loose Parts Rock Garden and a water themed Natural Play Space.

Children’s Discovery Garden

Beginning at the age of two, our children assist in the planning, planting and care of the vegetables growing in our Children’s Discovery Garden. Each classroom cares for a specific vegetable or herb throughout the various growing seasons, while creating a garden journal documenting changes and observations as the children work. Our garden lessons incorporate hands-on elements of math, science, art, reading and writing, as well as messy fun! We are fortunate to be able to enjoy gardening all 12 months of the year by not only caring for warm and cold weather crops outside, but by also utilizing our greenhouse during the winter months as the children prepare seedlings for spring. Our year round program allows the children the satisfaction in caring for and, literally, enjoying the fruits of their labor!
